The Basics of Immunoglobulin Replacement Therapy

The Basics of Immunoglobulin Replacement Therapy

If you’re one of the millions of people who suffer from a disease that affects your immune system, then you know how serious infections can be. They can recur, seem impossible to treat, and can quickly become severe. However, at Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group we want you know that this doesn’t have to be your life. There are treatments out there, including immunoglobulin replacement therapy.

What is immunoglobulin replacement therapy?

If you choose a treatment like immunoglobulin replacement therapy, you’re choosing an option that can actually increase your immune system’s ability to fight off infections. How? By replacing the antibodies your immune system is missing.

How does this immune system therapy work?

Within immunoglobulin, there are antibodies that are essential for you to fight an infection. A healthy person has tons of them in their plasma but people who have specific immune deficiency disorders don’t have enough of it naturally. As a result, they need therapy that actually replaces the immunoglobulin they’re replacing. This replacement IgG is made from plasma that’s been donated and then purified.

This therapy can be administered in several ways

If you decide to work with Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group for this therapy then you’ll have a few different options in how it can be administered. First, you can choose an intravenous option. If you go that route, then you’ll need treatment once per month. On the other hand, if you choose the other option, subcutaneous, then the therapy is actually put under the skin. Administering it this way requires treatment once a week. Both administration options have been proven effective to replace missing IgG to help fight off infections.
