Like many communities in southern California, Moorpark CA started out as part of a large Spanish ranch, and was then subdivided and sold over the years. The piece of land where the city was founded passed into the hands of Robert Poindexter in 1887, and he gave the settlement the name Moorpark CA after the Moorpark apricot variety. One interesting fact about Moorpark CA is that it was among the first cities to run on nuclear power. It got this power from an experimental reactor at a nearby national lab.
