4 of the Most Common Causes of Fall Allergies

Anyone who has experience allergies knows they are annoying and disruptive. You never know when you could start sneezing, your nose could start running, or your eyes could start itching. Fall is particularly challenging for allergy sufferers. While many know this, they do not always know why.

Keep reading to find out four of the most common causes of fall allergies. If you have experienced any of these or are interested in getting an allergy test, Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group is here to help. Call us at 805-658-9500 to find out more about your options.

  1. Hay fever
  2. The name can be misleading as hay fever has nothing to do with hay. It is a term that is used to describe the symptoms that often come during fall or at the end of summer. For example, ragweed is one of the most common causes of hay fever. Depending on what part of California you live in, ragweed may be more actively aggravating during certain months or weeks than others. The right prescription medication or shot can help prevent a reaction to hay fever.

  3. Warm weather
  4. As the weather stays warm, it may be great news for those who want to head to the beach but it can actually aggravate the symptoms of rhinitis and make them last even longer. When the weather is warm and dry it can also release mold spores. When you add that to the windy and highly humid air, the mold spores can travel long distances and cause allergies.

  5. Leaves
  6. There’s a lot to love about trees shedding their leaves but it can be a big issue for people with allergies. This is especially true if they are in charge of raking or otherwise dealing with the leaves. The air around fallen leaves generally has pollen and mold in it, which can cause or worsen allergy symptoms. Medications can help with this but it is wise to wear a mask if you must rake the leaves, mow the lawn, or even garden in the fall.

  7. School
  8. Kids are exposed to a huge range of irritants every time they enter a classroom. This can include things like chalk dust and classroom pets. They can be exposed to allergens that travel on the skin or clothing of other children. When stuck inside a small classroom all day, these allergens can bounce around and infect several people.
