An Unlikely Pair: If You Are Experiencing Both Asthma & Acid Reflux, It Isn’t a Coincidence

An Unlikely Pair: If You Are Experiencing Both Asthma & Acid Reflux, It Isn’t a Coincidence

If you have noticed that when your asthma is at its worst, your acid reflux (heartburn) is equally as bad—this is no coincidence. Although science has yet to discover the connection between the two, it has been determined the two conditions are related in some way. When acid reflux gets worse, your asthma typically does as well, and vice-versa. Even though the science behind it has yet to be identified, we do know how to treat it.

At Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group, we can help you manage your asthma and acid reflux imbalances and fluctuations. Call us at 805-658-9500 to schedule an appointment or go to our Contact Page. Continue reading to learn more about treatment options.

Medication

Make sure to consult with a doctor before you begin any new medication to ensure you can take it.

One option that can work is over-the-counter medication. Prilosec OTC is an otc drug that can help control your acid reflux. If you can get your heartburn under control, it might not affect your asthma as much.

If an over-the-counter drug is not effective, prescription medication will most likely be the next viable option.

Your doctor might also suggest changing asthma medication. In cases, some asthma medications like theophylline can actually worsen your acid reflux. However, do not change medication without consulting with your doctor first.

Diet

Reflux triggers can worsen the condition and can be found in diet/lifestyle choices. Avoiding these triggers might reduce your reflux naturally:

  • Fatty Foods
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Fried Food
  • Spicy Food
  • Cheese
  • Potato Chips (processed snacks)

It is recommended to try cutting some of these items from your lifestyle for a couple of weeks to see if it makes a difference. Consult with a doctor for more options.
