Have you noticed an allergic reaction since you started taking a medication? Are you taking several medications at once and aren’t sure which one is the one causing the problems? Or has the problem started after you’ve been using the medication for a while and you’re not 100% sure that it’s the source of the allergy? Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group is here to help with these and other allergy related needs.
Did you know that often times, the side effects listed on warning labels for medications are actually the result of allergic reactions? In fact, some medications that are perfectly safe for almost everyone can be deadly for a select few – penicillin is a good example. Knowing what medications you’re allergic to is important for your health today and in the future. If you think you may be allergic to a medication you’ve been taking then you need to call Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group at 805-658-9500 right away for medication allergy testing.
The first step will be for us to perform a physical exam on you. During that process we’ll ask you detailed questions about the medications you’re taking and what symptoms are presenting themselves. This is a crucial step in the process so be sure to bring a list of all medications for our allergists. They are highly experienced in these assessments. You can always count on us to know the right questions to ask and to interpret your answers the right way.
Blood tests are not always the best way to test for allergies but they can be useful in finding allergies to specific antibiotics. They’re also sometimes helpful in finding allergies to insulin and some muscle relaxants. If we suspect you’re allergic to one of these medications, then we may recommend a blood test. We also sometimes recommend blood tests if your allergic reaction was particularly severe and a skin prick test may come with extra risks.
There’s no question that skin prick tests are the go-to allergy testing option for almost all allergies – and there’s a reason for that. As you may know, it’s true that skin tests can give out false positives. However, they give extremely reliable negative results. As a result, they allow us to completely rule out certain allergies. We can perform a skin prick test right in our office.
