How Much Do You Know About Oral Allergy Syndrome?

Do you know what Oral Allergy Syndrome is? It’s a type of food allergy that results in an itchy throat and mouth when you eat fruits or veggies that are uncooked or raw. It’s actually one of the most common types of food allergies and could be as much as half as all of the allergies food causes. Others call it Pollen-Food Allergy Syndrome because it is a result of people who have a strong allergy to specific types of pollen.

Oral allergy syndrome is a “true allergy”

Referring to an allergy as a “true allergy” isn’t a judgement call. Instead, it simply refers to an allergy that results in a reaction that involves immunoglobulin E (otherwise known as Ig E), part of the immune system. Ig E is actually an antibody that involves food related symptoms, and though there are other types of syndromes, a “true allergy” is one that involves the Ig E antibody.

An example of a physiologic food problem

A food sensitivity or intolerance is every bit as real and significant as a “true allergy” and is referred to as a physiologic food problem. One of the most common examples is lactose intolerance. Some people simply can’t properly metabolize the sugar in milk – otherwise known as lactose – and that sugar stays in their bowels to cause diarrhea and cramps.

The symptoms of oral allergy syndrome

People who suffer from oral allergy syndrome typically have itching and tingling in their lips, mouth, and / or throat. In some cases, the mouth and through may also have small bumps. These symptoms can be caused by raw fruit, raw spices, uncooked nuts, raw veggies, and roasted nuts. These allergies occur in people who are allergic to pollen. Why? Because the protein allergens in these foods are similar to allergens in pollen and the immune system is treating them the same.

In most cases, swallowing the food will stop the allergic reaction because stomach acid destroys the allergens. Cooking will also destroy the allergen, which is why sufferers rarely have symptoms with canned fruits or veggies. For example, a raw apple may cause symptoms while apple pie or applesauce wouldn’t.

Some cases of oral allergy syndrome are more serious

In about 10% of those who suffer from oral allergy syndrome, the symptoms are more complicated and severe. Eating the above described foods can lead to itching and peeling hands when you touch raw foods, stomach cramps after foods have been ingested, and even wheezing, vomiting, and blood pressure changes.
