This Treatment for Immune Deficiency Diseases Could Be a Game-Changer

Having an immune deficiency disorder means that your body simply can’t protect itself as well as it should. It can lead to diseases that are recurrent or more severe than they would be in someone with a healthy immune system. It can lead to infections that are impossible to cure. As a person living with this condition, you already know all of this. What you may not know is that immunoglobulin replacement therapy could change your life.

The way this and other treatments work is by boosting your body’s ability to take on infections. This is possible because the treatment actually replaces the antibodies your immune system is missing. It’s not the right solution for everyone, but it could be for you. To learn more about it, read on and then reach out to Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group at 805-658-9500 to make an appointment.

A brief overview of how the treatment works

When you visit us for your assessment, we can go into the specifics of how this therapy works for those who are interested. However, we can cover the basics here. Immunoglobulin, also known as IgG, has essential antibodies that work hard to fight infection. Healthy people have plenty of it in their blood plasma but those of you with specific immune deficiency issues don’t have enough.

The therapy we perform is one step to help correct this. We do it by taking plasma that’s been donated and purified, and introducing it to your system. For many of our patients, this has been a true game changer.

Immunoglobulin can be administered in several ways

There are two main options for administrating this treatment. First is intravenously through an IV. This must be done once a month. The other option is subcutaneously, which means it’s delivered under your skin. This treatment must be done weekly. Either method is fine and both have been found to be effective at replacing the necessary immunoglobulin to fight infections.

We don’t administer the replacement therapy right at our office. Instead, we send you to a specialty pharmacy that can have these treatments done right in your home, or we can recommend an infusion center that specializes in these treatments. Either way, we will be very active in both the creation and monitoring of the treatment you receive.
