There Are Many Types of Skin Allergies and Many Treatment Options

You might be surprised to learn just how many people have some type of skin allergy. Consider that 17% of those who work in the healthcare industry have an allergy to latex gloves. Then consider that one in five infants have eczema. These are just two skin allergies and two demographics.

At Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group, we work with people who have a wide range of skin allergies. We work to find the right solution for their unique situation. The first step is diagnostic and then we find treatment options. We can also work to find ways to avoid potential skin allergies. Our first goal is always to treat the painful, itchy, and unsightly effects of skin allergies.

There are many types of skin allergies – here are some of the most common

It would take a book to list all the different types of skin allergies. In fact, we have many books on the subject! Some of the most common types of skin allergies include:

  • Eczema: If you have skin that’s red, scaly, and dry then you may have eczema. It’s often caused by or worsened by other conditions, including food allergies, asthma, or hay fever.
  • Allergic contact dermatitis. This type of allergy happens when you skin comes into direct contact with something you’re allergic to. It’s possible to be allergic to almost anything but the most common causes we treat are fabrics, nickel, dye, and various fabrics.
  • Hives. Many people believe that hives are just a symptom but they’re actually a condition in and of themselves. They look like red bumps that are round or just general swelling. They can be triggered by things like eating foods you’re allergic to or touching something you’re allergic to.
  • Swelling disorders. If you’re allergic to a food or medication and you develop hives, you could also develop a swelling disorder. Essentially, it’s when the deepest layers of your skin swell. It’s technically known as angioedema.
