Pulmonary Function Testing May Can Help Us Diagnose Your Condition

There may be nothing worse than having a hard time breathing and not knowing what is causing it. At Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group we can help with conditions that lead to difficulty breathing, including allergies, immune deficiency conditions, and asthma. However, we cannot help until we know what the underlying problem is.

The good news is that we have a number of ways to test our patients to find the underlying cause of their issues. Once we have found that cause we can come up with a comprehensive plan to get them into their top health. One of these tests is a pulmonary function test. Read on to learn more about it and then contact us at 805-658-9500 to make an appointment.

Pulmonary function testing services two purposes

One important thing to note is that there are actually two essential roles of pulmonary function testing. First, it can help us quantify the difficulties our clients are having with their breathing. This gives us much-needed information to diagnose their underlying condition. Second, once we have a treatment plan in place, further pulmonary function testing helps us to verify that the treatments are working as intended.

There are several types of pulmonary function testing

The most common pulmonary function test we provide is known as the spirometry test. We use it often because it is very easy to use and it is easy to interpret. All it requires of you is to breathe into a mouthpiece. The device then records how much air is going into your lungs and how much is coming out. It also tells us the speed at which the air is moving.

Other potential pulmonary function testing we may ask you to complete are the lung volume measure test and the diffusion capacity test. The first will tell us how much air your lungs are able to hold. The second will tell us how effectively your lungs take in air and then move oxygen through your bloodstream.

We can find the best next steps after your tests

Once we have looked at the results of your pulmonary function tests, we can offer a treatment plan that works best for your level of breathing impairment. We will also ensure that it is compatible with any medications you are taking. You can count on our experienced allergist to not only create the right plan for you, but monitor it and gauge how effective it is. As time goes on, we will make adjustments or suggestion different treatment as needed.

There is no reason to live with difficulty breathing. We know this can be a scary condition and many people worry that there is nothing that can be done about it. Trust us when we tell you that we will work diligently to find out what the issue is and the best way to treat it.
