It's Almost Time for Spring Cleaning: Learn How You Can Do So Safely with Allergies

Spring will be here before you know it, and if you’re like many American households that means that you’ll soon be taking on spring cleaning duties. If you have allergies, this can be a tough time for you. As the tree pollen comes out, and the dust unsettles as you clean it, you could be dealing with a one-two punch. That’s why we’ve created some tips for cleaning with allergies.

Keep the windows closed

For many people, this is a counterintuitive step since it would seem that opening up the windows would let the fresh air in. The truth is that it does let in fresh air – but that’s not always a good thing. If you’re allergic to tree pollen, then open windows are a great way for tree pollen to get into your home.

Get rid of mold immediately

Mold is not uncommon in bathrooms, basements, and anywhere with tiles. The fact is that these areas tend to attack moisture, which is what mold is looking for. As a result, the key to getting rid of it is to control the moisture in the area. Get rid of any visible mold by using a combination of water and detergent and scrub it down. Then dry it well. Keeping your home at or below 60% humidity is another good way to reduce your exposure to mold.

Wash everything you pet uses or frequents

You love your pet but their dander can be a serious problem for an allergic person. The best way to reduce your exposure is to vacuum on a regular basis. You should also wash all your upholstery, including your pet’s bedding. Finally, keep your pets out of your bedroom 24/7. Even if you kick them out at night, if they’ve been then during the day you’ll be facing a pillow full of dander at the end of the day.

Clean the whole house at once

The way allergens work is that they build up over time. For some people who are only slightly allergic, they can be around what they’re allergic to a little at a time. It’s only haver repeated exposure over numerous days that it begins to be a serious issue. This is why we recommend getting the entire home cleaned in a day or two.

Clean your house so you can stay indoors during high pollen counts

If you have hay fever that’s severe, then you may want to simply stay inside when pollen counts are high. If you’re stuck inside, you want to be stuck in a clean house. Of course, you may not have to stay home at all. At Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group we offer a wide range of allergy treatments that can help you.
