Is FASENRA the Right Solution for Your Asthma Symptoms?

No one wants to live with asthma yet people all over American believe they have no choice. The truth is that there are many treatments for asthma and none of them are perfect for everyone. However, in order to find the best treatment, you should consider all options. One of the newer choices is FASENRA and at Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group we are finding it to be a great choice for some patients.

This is a solution for patients 12 and older

FASENRA injections are certainly not for everyone. In fact, they are right only for a patient that is at least 12 years old. Everyone knows that severe asthma can be limited and if regular medications are not controlling it appropriately, then these injections can be the answer. If you are interested in adding FASENRA to your treatment plan then you can contact us at 805-658-9500 or read on for more information.

The way FASENRA works

FASNERA injections work by reducing specialized white blood cells. These cells are called eosinophils and they can trigger inflammation in both the lungs and airways if there are too many of them. FASENRA has been shown in clinical trials to boost lung performance and lower severe asthma attacks by more than 50%. What’s more, these injections can actually lower your reliance on daily oral steroid medications.

Treating patients with FASENRA

A patient who is right for FASENRA will visit their asthma doctor and have the injections done there. In the beginning, patients get an injection every four weeks. Once three months have gone by – or three injections have been given – then the patient gets maintenance injections every eight weeks. Note that you will keep using the asthma medication you have been using unless specifically told to stop taking it.

The safety of FASENRA

Of course, before you start any type of medical procedure you want to know that it is safe. The FDA has approved FASENRA for treatment severe asthma patients who are at least 12 years old. This safety was established – along with its effectiveness in the largest clinical trial ever for targeted therapies in eosinophilic asthma.

As is true of just about any medical treatment, some people did experience side effects. The most common were headaches and sore throats. The more serious potential side effect is an allergic reaction. However, since the injections are administered by a doctor, any side effects can be swiftly dealt with.

Should you consider FASENRA for your asthma?

This depends on numerous factors including your age, how severe your asthma is, how well it is responding to standard medications, and your age.
