Some of the most common swelling disorders

Not all swelling disorders are the result of allergies – thought many of them. One of the most common swelling disorders that is related to allergies is angioedema. Many people know this disorder as hives. It results in the swelling of seep skin tissue and can affect many parts of the body, including hands, eyelids, feet, lips, and tongue. It’s often caused by allergic reactions to things like insect bites or certain foods. We’ll check for some of the rarest causes of angioedema too, like complement protein deficiencies that are related to similar systemic diseases.

Eosinophilic esophagitis is a swelling disorder that makes it hard to, painful, or impossible to swallow. It’s generally related to food allergies and it affects the tissues in a person’s esophagus. Hay fever, otherwise known as allergic rhinitis, can experience swelling in their mucous membranes (it’s then referred to as rhinosinusitis), nasal passages (it’s then called sinusitis), or sinuses themselves.

Another symptom of hay fever are ocular allergies. These are allergies that can lead to swollen eyes, and eyes that are puffy, red, watery, and itchy. That said, any type of allergen that the immune system decides is a threat can lead to swelling around the eyes, assuming that allergen comes in contact with that area.

Treatment options for swelling disorders

The first thing we want everyone to know is that swelling disorders can be extremely dangerous. This is especially true when they affect airways because they have the potential to completely restrict breathing. We will not just treat the swelling disorder but will look for the underlying causes to see if we can get rid of these issues for good.

In most cases, one of the first things we’ll do is to perform a comprehensive allergy test to see exactly what you’re allergic.
