Pulmonary function testing is a great way to offer answers about your asthma or allergies

At Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group, we treat patients who suffer from asthma, allergies, and immune deficiency conditions. For all of them, it can be a challenge to breath normally. That’s where pulmonary function testing comes in. It can be used to help us learn more about the difficulties and where they come from. It helps us determine what treatments to try and to then verify that the treatments are working.

There are several types of pulmonary function testing

Pulmonary function testing isn’t one test that you can use, it’s actually a category of tests and there are many that may work for you. One of the most common options is the spirometry test. It’s used so often because it’s very simple to do and it’s easy to interpret. All that’s required is you breathing into a mouthpiece. The Spirometer then records how much air goes into your lungs and how much air comes out, along with how quickly it does both.

Other tests we may use include a lung volume measurement test or a diffusion capacity test. Both can help us determine how much air your lungs are able to hold, as well as how effectively your lungs are able to actually move oxygen through your bloodstream. The only way to know for sure which test or tests you need is to talk to an allergist who can assess your symptoms. In many instances, we may choose to start with a spirometry test and then move on to more complex tests as needed.

Are you ready to get answers about your breathing trouble?

Once we’ve had time to assess the results of your test or tests, we can create a treatment plan that’s specific to your level of breathing impairment. We’ll also look at all other medications you may be taking for other conditions to ensure that the treatment plan we set up is compatible with them. You can trust that our experienced allergists are going to provide you with the best possible treatment.

We’ll also take steps to continue to monitor your progress. This lets us know if we should continue as is or if changes need to be made. Our overall goal is to strike the right balance of medications that works for you without causing undue side effects.
