Do Allergy Shots Really Work? Get the Skinny on Immunotherapy

Are you tired of living with your allergies? Have you simply accepted that treating the symptoms is the best you can do? The truth is that there may be a better answer out there for you: Immunotherapy. Also known as allergy shots, this is a method that’s been in use for more than a century. The first time we know for sure it was used was back in 1911.

In the years since then, there have been much scientific evidence that shows just how effective this method can be. It can help to reduce allergic reactions to such a degree that you may no longer have symptoms at all. This isn’t the right solution for everyone, but for those who do benefit, those benefits are often enormous. Read on to learn more and then reach out to Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group at 805-658-9500 to find out more about your options.

The basics of immunotherapy

Immunotherapy essentially works by the same principles that vaccines work. With allergy shots, you get several injections, each one with slightly more of the specific allergen or allergens you’re allergic to. As time goes on, your body will get the tolerance it needs to that allergen and it will no longer produce the immune response that causes your symptoms.

There are two phases to immunotherapy

The first phase is known as the build-up phase. It typically goes on for between six and nine months. You’ll receive shots, each one stronger than the one before, until you get to the target level. Every case is different, but you can typically assume that you’ll get shots once or twice each week in this phase.

After you’ve gotten to your target dose, then we begin phase two: The maintenance phase. This involves a shot or two every month for the next three to five years, depending on your situation. It’s possible that you’ll see significant improvement after that first year, but we recommend that you continue with the treatment until you’ve finished it, if you want to ensure long-lasting relief.

Most allergies can be treated this way – except food allergies

Unfortunately, food allergies can’t be treated with immunology. The good news though is that most other allergies can be, including hay fever, bee sting allergies, and allergic asthma. It’s true that there are numerous allergists out there, but at Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Medical Group we have been providing treatment for all types of asthma and allergy for nearly 40 years.

Our team is knowledgeable, skillful, and experienced. We’ll start by definitively determining what allergens are causing your trouble and then come up with a unique treatment plan based on your specific needs. We’ll decide how much allergen should be in each shot you get, how long your treatment will last, and how we can most effectively treat your symptoms as you’re getting this long-term treatment.
