When the airways to the lungs become inflamed, individuals are having what is commonly referred to as an Asthma Attack. What Are Biologics?

It is first important to understand what biologics are. Biologic drugs are human-made proteins that are designed to zero in on parts of the immune system that trigger inflammation. They come from a living source (a human or animal) or its products. They can used to treat numerous conditions varying in severity.

The Top Medications for Asthma

FASENRA – These injections help control severe asthma by reducing specialized white blood cells called eosinophils. These cells can trigger inflammation in the lungs and airway if they become too abundant. FASENRA has been clinically proven to improve lung function, reduce severe asthma attacks by up to 51 percent, and even reduce reliance on daily oral steroid medications. When you first start treatment, injections will occur every 4 weeks.

CINQAIR – CINQAIR works by inhibiting interleukin 5, which is a key mediator in eosinophil activation. Eosinophils are specialized white blood cells that can cause lung and airway inflammation—and contribute to asthma attacks—when present at elevated levels. By helping to control eosinophils, CINQAIR can improve breathing and help prevent severe asthma attacks. CINQAIR is not used to treat other problems caused by eosinophils.

XOLAIR – These injections can help with both hives and allergy triggered asthma. If you have allergies, your body is creating too much of the IgE protein antibody. Excessive amounts of this protein are responsible for your allergy symptoms. XOLAIR binds to IgE in the bloodstream and prevents it from acting upon your immune system and causing allergic reactions.
